| Introduced to the western world by Yogi Bhajan in 1969, Kundalini yoga is all about power and precision. Most people often refer to the Kundalini style as the mother of all yogas. In addition to challenging postures, this type of yoga employs chanting (mantras), meditations and visualizations to help stimulate the mind, body and spirit. It’s commonly believed that practicing Kundalini yoga will produce results 16 times faster than other types of yoga. Kundalini energy is stored in your spine. This style of yoga works to release that energy to give your day a kick-start. The energy source is usually described as a sleeping serpent that, when awoken, will slither through your body, re-energizing your spirit. So how is this secret source of energy brought to life? It’s released through postures, breathing technique, meditation and chanting. The postures involved in Kundalini yoga are very demanding on your body, but they are not as defined in technique as postures in other types of yoga. Proper breathing is the key to the practice of Kundalini yoga, and breathing is used to renew dormant energy in your body. Once you have successfully released the hidden Kundalini energy, you will feel more alert and relaxed. In addition to postures and breathing techniques, Kundalini yoga also uses hand positions and aerobic workout movements to help you energize. One great aspect about Kundalini yoga is that it can be done at anytime, anywhere. If you are feeling the stress of the day, take a few minutes to meditate or stretch into a Kundalini posture. The benefits of Kundalini yoga include increased energy and oxygen capacity, peace of mind and weight loss. "Kundalini Yoga is uncoiling yourself to find your potential and your vitality and to reach for your virtues. There is nothing from outside. Try to understand that. All is in you. You are the storehouse of your totality." - Yogi Bhajan |
